Bidet Seat Compatibility Guide: Will It Fit Your Toilet?
Share
If you're thinking about upgrading your toilet to add on a bidet seat, one of the most common questions I get from customers is: Will this fit my toilet? It's a great question and very important you know the answer before you make a purchase. To help you make the right decision, I’ve put together this guide so you can confidently choose a bidet seat that works with your existing setup and makes for a simple installation.

Step 1: Know Your Toilet Type
The first thing you need to figure out is whether you have a one-piece or two-piece toilet.
Two-piece toilets are the most common, with a separate tank and bowl. Most bidet seats are designed to fit these models without any trouble.
One-piece toilets have the tank and bowl molded together. These can be a bit trickier, especially if the design curves sharply near the seat area (often called a French-curve). Some one-piece toilets work great, but not all are compatible with standard seats.
Step 2: Grab a Tape Measure
Don’t worry measuring your toilet only takes a couple of minutes and is a lot easier than it may sem. Here’s what you need to check:
- Bolt Spread – Measure the distance between the two holes at the back of the bowl where the seat attaches. Standard spacing is about 5.5 inches.
-
Bowl Length – Measure from the center of the bolt holes to the front edge of the bowl.
• If it's around 18–19.5 inches, you have an elongated toilet.
• If it’s about 16–17.5 inches, it’s likely a round bowl. - Space Behind the Bolts – You’ll need at least 1.5 inches of clearance between the bolt holes and the water tank to accommodate the rear of most bidet seats.
If your toilet has an unusual design, feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to take a look at photos or measurements to confirm compatibility.
Step 3: Know Your Bowl Shape
Understanding the shape of your toilet bowl is key. Most modern toilets in North America are elongated, but round bowls are still pretty common in smaller bathrooms.
- Elongated Bowls – These are a bit longer and offer more comfort. If this is what you have, take a look at something like the Cascade 3000 Bidet Seat, which fits most elongated models and offers a ton of premium features.
- Round Bowls – More compact and great for tight spaces. Just make sure to choose a bidet seat specifically made for round toilets.
Toilets That Might Not Work
There are a few exceptions where standard bidet seats may not fit:
- Toilets with extreme curves or decorative skirting (often seen in one-piece toilets)
- Models with hidden or non-standard mounting holes
- Some imported or compact toilets with unique dimensions
If that’s the case, you might want to consider a fully integrated smart toilet like the SLT-700, which eliminates compatibility concerns altogether.
Quick Fit Checklist
Here’s a quick list I advise you to run through before you buy:
- Two-piece toilet
- 5.5" bolt spread
- Bowl shape matches seat (elongated or round)
- At least 1.5" of clearance behind the bolts
- No extreme curves or obstructions behind the seat area
If you can check all of those boxes, you’re in great shape.
